Este gen codifica una uridina 5'-monofosfato sintasa. La proteína codificada es una enzima bifuncional que cataliza los dos últimos pasos de la vía biosintética de novo de las pirimidinas. La primera reacción la realiza la enzima orotato fosforribosiltransferasa, que convierte el ácido orótico en orotidina-5'-monofosfato. La reacción terminal la realiza la enzima OMP descarboxilasa, que convierte la orotidina-5'-monofosfato en uridina monofosfato. Los defectos en este gen son la causa de la aciduria orótica hereditaria. El empalme alterno produce múltiples variantes de transcripción.
