La carboxilesterasa 3 de ratón (CES3) pertenece a cinco familias de carboxilesterasas de mamíferos y participa en la catalización de reacciones hidrolíticas y de transesterificación con xenobióticos, profármacos anticancerígenos y narcóticos, así como en la desintoxicación de organofosforados e insecticidas. Las carboxilesterasas de mamíferos son enzimas con una amplia especificidad de sustrato, desde ésteres de moléculas pequeñas hasta ésteres de ácidos grasos de cadena larga. Se ha demostrado que las CES desempeñan un papel clave en el metabolismo de una amplia variedad de fármacos clínicos, narcóticos ilícitos y agentes neurotóxicos químicos. La CES3 se expresa ampliamente en hígado, colon y cerebro.
