Los inhibidores tisulares de metaloproteinasas (TIMP) son una familia de proteínas que regulan la activación y la actividad proteolítica de las enzimas de zinc conocidas como metaloproteinasas de matriz (MMP). Esta familia consta de cuatro miembros: TIMP-1, TIMP-2, TIMP-3 y TIMP-4. El inhibidor tisular de metaloproteinasas 2 (TIMP-2) es una proteína no N-glicosilada con una masa molecular de 22 kDa. Es producida por una amplia gama de tipos celulares, inhibe las MMP de forma no covalente mediante la formación de complejos binarios y las inactiva irreversiblemente al unirse a su cofactor catalítico de zinc. El TIMP-2 también tiene actividades potenciadoras de la eritroides y promotoras del crecimiento celular.
