Los modificadores pequeños similares a la ubiquitina incluyen SUMO1, SUMO2, SUMO3 y SUMO4. A excepción de SUMO4, todos los demás SUMO se expresan de forma ubicua, incluso en el cerebro. En humanos, SUMO2 y SUMO3 son dos proteínas altamente homólogas, denominadas colectivamente SUMO2/3.
