El receptor de tirosina-proteína quinasa erbB-3 es una enzima codificada en humanos por el gen ERBB3. Este gen codifica un miembro de la familia de receptores de tirosina quinasas del receptor del factor de crecimiento epidérmico (EGFR). ERBB3 pertenece a la superfamilia de las proteína quinasas, la familia de las proteína quinasas tyr y la subfamilia de receptores de EGF. Contiene un dominio de proteína quinasa y se expresa en tejidos epiteliales y cerebro. Esta proteína unida a la membrana posee un dominio de unión a neuregulina, pero no un dominio de quinasa activa. Por lo tanto, puede unirse a este ligando, pero no transmitir la señal a la célula mediante la fosforilación proteica. Sin embargo, forma heterodímeros con otros miembros de la familia de receptores de EGF que sí presentan actividad quinasa.
