La neuregulina-1 (heregulina-1; NRG1) pertenece a la familia de las neuregulinas, compuesta por cuatro genes que codifican un gran número de isoformas secretadas o unidas a la membrana. Todos los miembros de la familia comparten un dominio similar al EGF que interactúa con la familia ErbB de receptores de tirosina quinasa. Las isoformas de NRG1 se clasifican en tipo I, tipo II y tipo III. NRG1 dirige el ligando para los receptores de tirosina quinasa ERBB3 y ERBB4; recluta simultáneamente los correceptores ERBB1 y ERBB2, lo que resulta en la fosforilación de tirosina estimulada por el ligando y la activación de los receptores ERBB. Las proteínas NRG muestran patrones de expresión espacial y temporal distintivos y desempeñan un papel importante durante el desarrollo tanto del sistema nervioso como del corazón.
