El ADNc de la folistatina 288 humana codifica una proteína de 317 aminoácidos (aa) con una secuencia señal de 29 aa y una región madura de 288 aa. La folistatina muestra la mayor afinidad por las activinas debido a su configuración extendida. La deleción genética de la folistatina en ratones, o la expresión exclusiva de la forma folistatina, es letal en la etapa perinatal debido a defectos en los pulmones, la piel y el sistema musculoesquelético. Las folistatinas también regulan la adhesión de las células madre hematopoyéticas a la fibronectina a través de FS2.
