El factor de crecimiento epidérmico (EGF) es una proteína pequeña de 53 aminoácidos que contiene tres puentes disulfuro. Es una proteína mitogénica pequeña que se cree que participa en mecanismos como el crecimiento celular normal, la oncogénesis y la cicatrización de heridas. El EGF estimula el crecimiento de diversos tejidos epidérmicos y epiteliales in vivo e in vitro, así como de algunos fibroblastos en cultivo celular. Esta proteína muestra una fuerte homología secuencial y funcional con el factor de crecimiento transformante tipo alfa humano (hTGF alfa), que compite por los receptores del EGF.
