La amina oxidasa sensible a la amilorida (AOC1) pertenece a la familia de las oxidasas de cobre/topaquinona. Esta proteína existe como homodímero por disulfuro y se localiza principalmente en la placenta y el riñón. La AOC1 cataliza la degradación de compuestos como la putrescina, la histamina, la espermina y la espermidina, sustancias implicadas en las respuestas alérgicas e inmunitarias, la proliferación celular, la diferenciación tisular, la formación de tumores y, posiblemente, la apoptosis. Se cree que la DAO placentaria desempeña un papel en la regulación de la función reproductiva femenina. La actividad de esta proteína puede ser inhibida por la amilorida de forma competitiva. Es inhibida por la amilorida, un diurético que actúa cerrando los canales iónicos de sodio epiteliales.
