La proteína similar a Bcl-2 1 (BCL2L1) pertenece a la familia Bcl-2. Se expresa en altos niveles en células con una alta tasa de recambio, como los linfocitos en desarrollo. BCL2L1 es una proteína de membrana mitocondrial. BCL2L1 contiene cuatro motivos: BH1, BH2 y BH4. El motivo BH4 es necesario para la actividad antiapoptótica. Los motivos BH1 y BH2 son necesarios tanto para la heterodimerización con otros miembros de la familia Bcl-2 como para la represión de la muerte celular. BCL2L1 regula la muerte celular bloqueando el canal aniónico dependiente de voltaje (VDAC) e impidiendo la liberación del activador de caspasas, CYC1, de la membrana mitocondrial. Además, BCL2L1 promueve la apoptosis.
