Esta enzima es independiente del calcio, dependiente de fosfolípidos y específica de serina y treonina. La PKC se activa por el diacilglicerol, que a su vez fosforila diversas proteínas celulares. La PKC también actúa como receptor de ésteres de forbol, una clase de promotores tumorales. Puede desempeñar un papel en el control dependiente de antígenos de la función de los linfocitos B. Fosforila MUC1 en el extremo C-terminal y regula la interacción entre MUC1 y la beta-catenina.
