La nestina es una proteína de filamento intermedio de clase IV de 200 kDa que se expresa principalmente en células madre neuroepiteliales embrionarias tempranas y durante el desarrollo de tendones y articulaciones neuromusculares. La nestina no es específica del sistema nervioso central, ya que identifica no solo el neuroepitelio más primitivo, sino también otros tejidos embrionarios. La nestina se expresa en casi todos los glioblastomas y melanomas (primarios y metastásicos), pero no se expresa en ningún carcinoma metastásico.
