El IFNA1 (interferón alfa) es un miembro de la familia del IFN tipo I (1), conocido por su actividad antiviral. Es una citocina clave que regula la actividad de los linfocitos B, los linfocitos T cooperadores (linfocitos Th), las células CD4 y las células asesinas naturales (linfocitos NK). El interferón alfa induce la maduración de los linfocitos B a células plasmáticas y la producción de inmunoglobulinas. Desempeña un papel importante en la patogénesis del lupus eritematoso sistémico (LES). El interferón alfa fue la primera citocina en demostrar beneficio clínico en el tratamiento de ciertos tipos de cáncer, como el melanoma, la leucemia mieloide crónica y el cáncer renal.
