Las hexoquinasas fosforilan la glucosa para producir glucosa-6-fosfato, el primer paso en la mayoría de las vías metabólicas de la glucosa. Este gen codifica una forma ubicua de hexoquinasa que se localiza en la membrana externa de las mitocondrias. Las mutaciones en este gen se han asociado con anemia hemolítica por deficiencia de hexoquinasa. El empalme alternativo de este gen da lugar a cinco variantes de transcripción que codifican diferentes isoformas, algunas de las cuales son específicas de cada tejido. Cada isoforma tiene un extremo aminoterminal distinto; el resto de la proteína es idéntica en todas las isoformas.
