Se utiliza como marcador para distinguir los astrocitos de otras células gliales durante el desarrollo. Las mutaciones en este gen causan la enfermedad de Alexander, un trastorno poco común de los astrocitos en el sistema nervioso central. El empalme alternativo da lugar a múltiples variantes de transcripción que codifican isoformas distintas.
