La citocromo c oxidasa (COX) es la enzima terminal de la cadena respiratoria mitocondrial. Es un complejo enzimático de múltiples subunidades que acopla la transferencia de electrones del citocromo c al oxígeno molecular y contribuye a un gradiente electroquímico de protones a través de la membrana mitocondrial interna. El complejo consta de 13 subunidades codificadas mitocondrial y nuclearmente. Las subunidades codificadas mitocondrialmente realizan las actividades de transferencia de electrones y bombeo de protones. Se desconocen las funciones de las subunidades codificadas nuclearmente, pero podrían desempeñar un papel en la regulación y el ensamblaje del complejo. Este gen codifica la isoforma 1 de la subunidad IV codificada nuclearmente de la enzima de la cadena respiratoria mitocondrial humana. Se encuentra en el extremo 3' del gen NOC4 (vecino de COX4) en una orientación cabeza a cabeza, y comparte un promotor con él.
