BMP2 se sintetiza como un precursor de 60 kDa que se procesa en la vía secretora hasta un pequeño monómero de 18 kDa; posteriormente, dos monómeros se asocian para formar el homodímero activo de 30 kDa, que se une a su receptor. También existe una forma de BMP2 de 40-45 kDa, como propéptido amino-terminal. BMP2 puede inducir la formación y regeneración ósea durante el desarrollo embrionario temprano. Participa en la vía erizo, la vía de señalización del TGF beta y la interacción entre receptores de citocinas.
