BRE regula negativamente la activación de NFkB inducida por TNFα y podría desempeñar un papel en la homeostasis o la diferenciación celular en células de origen epitelial, neural y germinal. Inhibe componentes de los complejos de señalización inductores de muerte celular necesarios para la activación mitocondrial, mediando así la apoptosis. BRE se expresa intensamente en la corteza suprarrenal, la médula, los testículos y el páncreas, y débilmente en el timo, la tiroides, el estómago y el intestino delgado.
