Este gen es muy similar al gen murino y codifica una proteína secretada que puede (1) afectar la calidad de la pigmentación del cabello, (2) actuar como antagonista farmacológico de la hormona estimulante de melanocitos alfa, (3) participar en los aspectos neuroendocrinos de la acción de la melanocortina, y (4) tener un papel funcional en la regulación del metabolismo lipídico en los adipocitos.
